Located in Sakurashinmachi, Setagaya Ward, Tokyo, the Setagaya Municipal Postpartum Care Center was established in March 2008 as Japan's first specialized postpartum care facility. Currently operated by the Japanese Midwives Association under commission from Setagaya Ward, the center provides professional care for new mothers and their babies with midwives available 24 hours a day. The center offers three service formats: residential short-stay (up to 7 nights) to support maternal physical and mental recovery, day care for same-day use, and outreach services for home visits, allowing support tailored to each family's living situation. Private rooms (Japanese-style and bed types) are available, and counseling sessions with certified psychologists and clinical psychologists are held every Tuesday and Thursday. Comprehensive support is provided, from learning childcare skills and breastfeeding consultations to nutritionally balanced meals. Rooms are available for use with preschool-aged siblings, creating an accessible environment for mothers managing postpartum life while caring for older children. English language support and barrier-free facilities are also available, making this a facility where diverse users can feel at ease.
